Vice-President Kashim Shettima has said Nigeria’s ambition to remain Africa’s logistics hub depends on reviving and modernising its railway system.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday at the opening of the second International Railway Conference, Shettima urged stakeholders to deepen partnerships and collaborations to unlock opportunities in the sector.
He stressed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is driving railway projects as part of efforts to position Nigeria as the anchor of West Africa’s economy and a major player in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“The challenge ahead of us is to lead this race as the logistics hub of Africa by reviving and revitalising our railway services,” Shettima said.
He cited projects like the Kano–Maradi railway modernisation as strategic gateways for trade, noting that modern rail infrastructure will reduce costs, improve efficiency, and expand access for businesses.
Shettima maintained that sustaining growth in logistics will not only strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness but also open new opportunities for SMEs across industries.
