Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) has been awarded a prestigious N1.5 billion grant for the Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) initiative.
According to a statement from the institution’s communications team, this achievement is the result of a successful proposal developed by a distinguished team of Yabatech researchers, including Dr. Funmilayo Doherty, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, Engr. Adebayo Adebari, Mr. Amos Alade, Dr. Olusola Dada, and Dr. Idowu Aneyo from the University of Lagos.
The proposal was selected by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and UNICEF through a competitive process, highlighting Yabatech’s dedication to education and skill development.
The GESP initiative, funded by FCDO and managed by UNICEF Nigeria in collaboration with leading businesses, aims to empower adolescent girls and young women by improving their access to valuable skills and economic opportunities.

The program targets young women aged 13-24, aiming to enhance their entrepreneurship, employability, and access to further education.
Operational in Bangladesh, Nigeria, and India, GESP promotes equality in learning, skilling, and livelihood opportunities.
Yabatech’s successful proposal will extend the impact of GESP to Lagos State, Nigeria, where 5,250 girls will receive comprehensive training in GSM and mobile phone repairs, computer hardware maintenance and repairs, mobile applications development, and web application development over two years.
The project involves collaboration with the International Network for Advancing Science and Policy (INASP) UK, which will integrate gender-responsive pedagogy into skills development.
