World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called on African leaders and entrepreneurs to prioritize self-reliance and innovative funding solutions as global aid diminishes.
Speaking at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, she emphasized the need to attract investment, mobilize local resources, and reduce dependence on external financial assistance.
Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian finance minister and World Bank economist, highlighted Africa’s potential to thrive by fostering homegrown business solutions.

Her remarks come amid recent cuts to US global funding, affecting critical health and education programs.
With Africa’s vast resources and a growing entrepreneurial sector, she urged business leaders to adopt a sustainable mindset, harness local opportunities, and build resilient enterprises for long-term economic independence.
