Women entrepreneurs push for economic integration, growth in West Africa

At the 2024 Business Fair of the Federation of Business Women Entrepreneurs (FEBWE), held recently in Lagos, Dame Pauline Tallen emphasized the transformative impact of empowering women.

She stated that when women are empowered, the benefits extend to families, societies, and entire nations, creating positive ripple effects throughout the economy.

Tallen called on the private sector to support FEBWE’s mission through funding and empowerment initiatives to achieve its objectives.

Anthony Luka Elumelu, representing the ECOWAS Commission and speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Massandjé TOURE-LITSE, highlighted FEBWE’s crucial role in fostering economic integration, peace, and governance across West Africa.

He underscored the importance of implementing the ECOWAS protocol on the free movement of people, goods, and services, arguing that seamless cross-border trade is essential for unlocking the region’s vast potential and driving growth.

In her remarks, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the Iyaloja General and President General of Commodity Market Women and Men of Nigeria, stressed the need for easier access to funds and government support for women entrepreneurs. She called for more initiatives like FEBWE to raise awareness and provide networking opportunities for women in business across ECOWAS member states.

The event attracted influential women leaders from across West Africa, particularly Nigeria. Presentations were delivered by prominent institutions, including the International Trade Centre-Geneva, Wema Bank, and CBW Africa, which focused on business growth through digital innovation and grants.

With over 35 exhibitors showcasing diverse products from various African countries, the fair highlighted the strength and diversity of the region’s women-led businesses. Princess Omotola Omole, President of FEBWE Nigeria, praised the ECOWAS-backed platform for advancing trade and supporting women entrepreneurs, expressing optimism that goods from the fair would soon circulate throughout West Africa, enhancing intra-regional commerce.

Madame Candide Leguede, during a panel discussion, addressed the challenges women entrepreneurs face in cross-border trade. She stressed the importance of understanding trading regulations to navigate border issues effectively, stating, “Both businessmen and women need to know their rights to ensure officials act professionally.”
