President Bola Tinubu says his administration is working hard to improve the nation’s economic and commercial environment.

Mr Tinubu made the remarks during a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his entourage at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday.

Mr Tinubu and the chancellor held three separate sessions before speaking at a combined press conference.

According to Nigeria’s president, the country has a large deposit of available gas, and the investment environment, as well as the availability of liquid natural gas, is increasing.

Mr Tinubu stated that his administration had improved the business environment in the country, adding that “we are going through several reforms.”

He also stated that Nigeria is willing to stimulate investment in gas pipelines, and that LNG will expedite the shipment of liquefied gas to Europe.

According to him, the government would continue to support opportunities for business and their partners to thrive.

“We are reforming our economic and business environment to promote efficiency,” Mr Tinubu stated.

“You may have read or heard that we have removed the oil subsidy.”

“We’re going through tax reforms to eliminate double taxation and give you better returns on investments.”

There are principles, according to the president, that will ensure that investment flourishes and is protected.

“We definitely welcome you to the collaboration; we’re happy this is happening to us,” he continued.

“I believe my friend will add more value to Nigeria’s environment; we discussed this.”

“I’ve made a commitment to you that we’ll promote efficiency, ease of doing business and remove all conflict areas that might be possible immediately.”

Concerning the Federal Government’s apparent failure to rescue over 12,000 Nigerians who were unable to obtain asylum in Germany and were facing deportation, Tinubu stated that such individuals were welcome to return home.

He did, however, reveal that both countries were working on legalizing the stay of economic refugees.”

The president stated that there was a lengthy discussion in this regard, recommending the separation of economic migrants from genuine refugees.

“We have a partnership program in place to ensure normal migration and deepen the relationship in that area.”

“I’m not making any demands; if they are Nigerian citizens, they are Nigerian citizens, and they are welcome back home.”

“Nothing should drive them away; we are ready to work together to improve the migration situation.”

“Because other young and vibrant people can go through the process according to the country’s immigration law, we will accept them as long as they are of good behavior and character.”

“We are ready to work together in that direction,” Mr Tinubu stated.

In response to the migration matter, Scholz stated that the debate was underway and that the gray areas would be resolved very soon.

“The first is that there is a need in Germany for people who have talent and want to work in our country in a way that is a regular path for migrants,” he said.

“We are working hard in this field, and we want to make more progress and get things agreed in detail.”

“The second part of this is also an agreement that those who do not have the right to remain in my country can and should return.”

“But this is where cooperation is also important; we will do so and it will be an important aspect of our work together.”

The German Chancellor regretted that resources were ‘only about extraction’ because they ended up in other countries rather than being used for Nigeria’s development.

“It is also critical that we use the method of developing your economy in the fields of minerals you have.”

“I believe that investments in this structure should be simple, but also beneficial to your country.”

“It has always bothered me that sometimes it is just about extraction, which is insufficient.”

“There should be a little more to make it possible for some aspects of economic development to be used in the countries of origin.”
