Residents and traders at Kano’s bustling Sabon-Gari market are raising alarms over the unchecked dumping of waste at the market’s entrance, a problem exacerbated by recent health concerns. Despite 1,579 suspected cholera cases and 54 deaths reported in Nigeria, the market’s entrance remains clogged with refuse.

Arewa PUNCH investigations revealed this troubling situation persists even after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf criticized the State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) for their poor performance. REMASAB is responsible for waste management in Kano’s eight metropolitan local government areas.

Further inquiries showed that last week, refuse almost blocked both lanes of France Road, causing significant traffic congestion near the market. The traders blame the market management for directing waste to be dumped by the roadside, worsening the situation.

Traders and customers voiced their frustration to Arewa PUNCH, with one trader saying, “The waste has been piling up for over a week, disrupting business and daily life.” Truck drivers also complained about the hindrance to their work, attributing the problem to market directives.

Local food vendors operating near the dump site expressed concerns about the health risks, especially in light of recent cholera outbreaks. Despite these issues, efforts to contact relevant authorities for resolution have been unsuccessful.
