Vice President Kashim Shettima has introduced the ‘Grand Challenges Nigeria’ (GCNg) initiative, aiming to transform Nigeria’s healthcare sector through locally developed solutions. At an event held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima emphasized that the programme’s initial focus would be on addressing critical maternal and child health needs.
As part of the global Grand Challenges network, the initiative seeks to promote innovative research and leverage local expertise to create sustainable healthcare solutions. Shettima noted that Nigeria must tap into its homegrown capabilities in science and technology to meet healthcare challenges, thereby driving economic growth through local entrepreneurship.

The GCNg programme will support groundbreaking research, providing a platform for Nigerian innovators and small businesses to develop impactful solutions tailored to local health needs. This focus on maternal and child health aims to fill critical gaps in healthcare, while fostering entrepreneurship and business innovation within the sector.
By launching the initiative, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stimulating innovation, supporting small businesses in healthcare, and contributing to the country’s socio-economic development.
