President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing education and youth empowerment in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 39th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) on Tuesday, Tinubu, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Malam Yusuf Sununu, emphasized the government’s resolve to improve the education sector and engage the youth in nation-building.
Tinubu highlighted the critical role of education in shaping the country’s future and commended the graduating students for their academic achievements. He urged the new graduates to actively contribute to addressing the nation’s challenges, particularly in areas of leadership, innovation, and development.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s current economic and security issues, the president expressed confidence in the resilience of the country and the potential of its young people. He encouraged the graduates to take leadership roles, leveraging their intelligence and integrity to steer Nigeria towards growth.
Tinubu also outlined the government’s initiatives to support students, including the recently launched Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND), which aims to ease access to education by providing financial support for students. He called on students to take advantage of the scheme, adding that the Federal Government remains committed to maintaining an uninterrupted academic calendar.
“The Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND) has come to stay, providing opportunities for students to learn without financial strain and repay later,” Tinubu noted.

The president also commended Unilorin for its remarkable achievements, including being recognized as the most subscribed university in Nigeria and for its national and international accomplishments. He highlighted the N500 million award the university received from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Best Federal University in ICT Integration award from the Bureau of Public Service Reforms.
Mr. Abiodun Aluko, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Unilorin, urged the graduates to apply the knowledge gained for societal improvement, while Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole emphasized the importance of education in fostering critical thinking, civic responsibility, and societal transformation.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by the Executive Chairman of Kwara SUBEB, Prof. Shehu Adaramaja, called on the graduates to embrace innovation as they transition into the next chapter of their lives. He encouraged them to use their education to drive positive change and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.
The convocation marked a significant milestone in the lives of the graduates, who were charged with the responsibility of continuing to seek knowledge and making impactful contributions to the nation and beyond.
