President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, launched the Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms in Abuja, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity and unlock new opportunities for stakeholders in the livestock value chain, including farmers, herders, processors, and distributors. The President appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Co-chairman of the Committee.

President Tinubu stressed the importance of collaborative efforts from the committee members, who hail from both public and private sectors, state governors, and the general public. He urged all involved to set aside partisan politics for the nation’s benefit, appointing himself as chairman and Professor Jega as his deputy. “This is about opportunity and our nation. While I may be absent, Jega will preside and continue to promote our objectives,” Tinubu stated.

The inauguration ceremony, held in the Council Chamber at the State House, saw President Tinubu expressing gratitude to Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for assembling a team of experienced experts to harness opportunities within the livestock sector. Tinubu announced plans to establish a Ministry of Livestock Development to further explore the sector’s potential, stating, “With the calibre of people here, we can delineate and establish a Ministry of Livestock Development. This will allow veterinary doctors to access research and cross-breeding opportunities, helping to prevent conflicts and violence.”

“Modern technology is at our disposal, and we are ready to work. Any laws hindering our objectives, the Attorney-General will prioritize. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning will create a budget, and the Minister of Finance will arrange the necessary funds,” Tinubu declared.

President Tinubu called for comprehensive and collective reforms, encouraging support from all stakeholders. He highlighted the economic benefits of livestock farming, dairy production, and cold-chain logistics, and expressed optimism about the future. “We have seen solutions and opportunities. Despite the adversities we’ve faced, I believe prosperity is within our grasp,” he concluded.
