In a major push to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education sector, President Bola Tinubu has approved the disbursement of over N700 billion to tertiary institutions through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in 2025. Universities will receive N2.8 billion each, while polytechnics and colleges of education will get N1.9 billion and N2.1 billion, respectively.

Announcing this at the 2025 Strategic Planning Meeting in Abuja, TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono detailed the fund allocation, with 91.08% of the funds going directly to institutions, covering annual direct and special disbursements. Another 8.72% is designated for special projects, and 0.20% for stabilisation funds.

Echono emphasized that infrastructure upgrades are a key focus, directing institutions to rehabilitate and modernize existing facilities. He also highlighted increased funding for research, academic staff training, and book development, aligning with national education priorities.

With these funds, tertiary institutions are expected to accelerate projects, enhance learning environments, and drive innovation, creating new opportunities for students, faculty, and businesses supporting the education sector.
