Governor Babagana Zulum has strongly criticized the proposed tax reform bills, warning of their adverse effects on small businesses and regional economies.
Speaking during an interview with the BBC Hausa service on Friday, Zulum urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other stakeholders to reconsider the reforms.
The bills, which propose prioritizing the location of consumption for Value Added Tax (VAT) sharing, have faced backlash, particularly from northern Nigeria.

“These bills will drag the north backward and negatively affect states like Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo. Small businesses, which rely on stable policies, will suffer immensely,” Zulum stated.
The governor also criticized the speed of the legislative process, urging caution to protect future generations. “If these bills are passed, sustaining salaries and operations will become a challenge, and small businesses will be the hardest hit,” he added.
Zulum’s call reflects the concerns of stakeholders advocating for a thorough review to safeguard small businesses and ensure national economic balance.
