Government officials held a productive engagement with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to explain recent tax reforms and their impact on youth-led businesses and SMEs. The discussion brought together student leaders from tertiary institutions across Nigeria, providing clarity on the rationale, objectives, and benefits of the reforms.

Officials highlighted that the tax reforms are designed to reduce the burden on average Nigerians while removing barriers that have limited youth participation in emerging sectors such as business process outsourcing (BPO), digital services, and other SME-driven opportunities. Students were assured that the reforms are not targeted at low-income groups but are intended to expand access to economic opportunities.

During the meeting, NANS leaders welcomed the transparency provided and acknowledged how the reforms create a more enabling environment for entrepreneurship, skill development, and business growth among young Nigerians. The dialogue demonstrated the government’s commitment to policy clarity, inclusion, and youth empowerment.

Following the engagement, students resolved to call off a planned protest and pledged to collaborate with the government to sensitise peers nationwide about the reforms. The outcome reinforces the idea that constructive dialogue, rather than confrontation, can foster understanding and support for policies that strengthen youth-led SMEs and the wider economy.
