The Taraba State Government is set to distribute a second batch of 53 compact tractors and 173 small tractors to enhance food production across the state.
In May, Governor Agbu Kefas announced plans to bolster food output by providing tractors at subsidized rates to farmers in the state’s 16 local government areas. On May 28, 2024, the first batch, which included 20 compact cabrio tractors and 250 mini tractors, was handed over to farmers.
After a recent tractor distribution committee meeting at the Governor Agbu Kefas Agricultural Mechanization Center in Jalingo, Commissioner of Agriculture and Food Security, Professor Nicholas Oliver, revealed that 20 containers loaded with tractors are expected to arrive within a week. The committee has begun collecting applications from cooperative groups for this next phase of distribution.

Professor Oliver praised the governor for the subsidies, which have significantly reduced costs for farmers. Small tractors, originally priced at ₦9 million, are now available for ₦4.5 million after an initial payment of ₦2.5 million, followed by monthly payments over four years. Larger tractors, initially costing ₦70 million, have been reduced to ₦35 million, with a down payment of ₦17.5 million and subsequent monthly installments.
Despite some delays, Professor Oliver assured that the government is committed to ensuring that genuine farmers receive the necessary support to guarantee food security in the region.
