The Chief Missioner of Taiwan in Nigeria, Andy Yih-Ping Liu, has unveiled a new initiative to support Nigeria’s green transition by introducing electric motorbikes to the Nigerian market. This move is part of Taiwan’s broader strategy to showcase its technological expertise and empower Africa, including Nigeria, with sustainable solutions that align with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Speaking at the Green Mobility Summit in Lagos, themed “Driving a Greener Tomorrow with Sustainable 2-Wheeler Mobility,” Liu emphasized the business potential of the electric mobility sector. He highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of adopting electric motorbikes, which would help reduce pollution and noise associated with traditional petrol motorcycles.
“Taiwan is bringing to Nigeria the most advanced e-mobility technology, which offers a sustainable, noise-free, and pollution-free alternative to traditional motorcycles,” Liu said. He stressed the importance of adopting this green technology, especially in a country like Nigeria, where electricity supply is still evolving but holds significant potential for renewable energy applications.

The initiative, led by Taiwanese tech company KYMCO, is expected to create new business opportunities, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) market, which is rapidly gaining traction globally. The introduction of electric motorbikes in Nigeria could stimulate local manufacturing, distribution, and maintenance services, creating jobs and promoting local entrepreneurship in the green economy.
At the summit, Handshin, co-founder of AaraGo—an innovative company providing EV batteries as a service—also called for an accelerated transition to clean energy solutions. AaraGo is working to bring the best global components to Nigeria to support the energy transition and boost the local economy by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
This initiative underscores the growing role of green technologies in the Nigerian business landscape, offering significant opportunities for businesses to diversify, innovate, and contribute to the country’s sustainable future.
