Meet Dotun Ajayi, a seasoned photographer and the proud CEO of Dotun Ajayi Studios, situated in Lagos. Enjoy his story as we spotlight his remarkable journey.

How did you embark on your journey in event photography?

I began my journey in event photography by accompanying my mentor, Oluremi Akintola Samuel, who is an event compere and holds the title of Senior Alaga of Nigeria (SAN). Initially, I would attend her events, capture videos, and create content for them. Over time, I developed a keen interest in photography. I discovered that photography had various niches, but to carve out a unique space for myself, I chose to focus on portrait and event photography.

I also had the privilege of connecting with another mentor in the industry, Korede Fakorede, who inspired and nurtured my passion for event photography. This marked the beginning of my journey in the world of event photography. I’ve had a passion for photography since my childhood, and I believe I inherited it from my father, who was a photographer before he became a pastor.

Moreover, I was fortunate to have Pastor Akintola Samuel, who is also a media practitioner, as a mentor. The constant presence of cameras in his sphere sparked my interest, and I offered to learn how to use them. He became my first photography teacher, imparting the basics of handling cameras. I often say that my pastor was the one who introduced me to the art of photography.

What were the most significant challenges along your journey, and how did you overcome them?

My most significant challenge has been self-doubt. I firmly believe that where you are in life is a result of the decisions you made or failed to make. So, I regularly engage in self-reflection, asking myself questions and evaluating my choices. I overcome challenges through self-awareness and introspection, leading to significant personal growth.

Can you describe a recent project or accomplishment that you are particularly proud of?

I take pride in every project I undertake, but if I were to highlight a recent one, it would be a family photoshoot I completed. The clients were thrilled with the photographs, and the project was executed flawlessly. It’s a source of pride for me.

How do you stay motivated and inspired in your field of work?

I practice positive affirmations and make personal declarations to boost my motivation. Staying connected with my mentors also keeps me inspired. For instance, when there was a lull in job opportunities last year, I confided in one of my mentors, who encouraged me to be patient. To my surprise, clients began reaching out soon after. The circle of people you surround yourself with and their positive influence is paramount to staying motivated.

What qualities or attributes do you believe are crucial for success in your industry?

Being a people person is essential in photography. You need to be patient, friendly, humorous, and personable. It’s about emotional intelligence and building strong relationships, which often lead to referrals. The quality of these relationships is often more important than the equipment or skills you possess. To succeed, you must be approachable, friendly, and lively, as these qualities make the work more enjoyable.

Can you share any valuable lessons or advice that you have learned from your experiences with our audience?

You will inevitably encounter challenging clients who may attempt to frustrate, intimidate, or even threaten you. It’s crucial to maintain high self-esteem and stand your ground because you cannot please everyone. Stay true to your principles and let go of clients who are not ready to comply.
