The National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down a bakery in Sokoto for using unfortified sugar and banned bromate. This action followed a special raid conducted by NAFDAC officials, as disclosed by the agency’s State Coordinator, Mr. Garba Adamu, to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.
During the raid, the bakery was found using saccharine, an unregistered foreign sweetener, along with prohibited bromate in their production process. “The seized items will be destroyed, and the bakery will remain closed until it adheres to the required regulations and directives,” Adamu stated.
Adamu highlighted that only fortified and registered sugar containing vitamin A and other micronutrients is permitted for sale and consumption in Nigeria. “This is a Federal Government policy enforced by NAFDAC and other agencies to ensure consumers receive maximum nutritional and health benefits from their food products,” he added.
Additionally, six other bakeries faced sanctions for poor hygiene practices as enforcement officers, led by Mr. Buhari Manzo, increased routine inspection visits across the state. “We monitor bakeries to ensure they do not use saccharine or other banned substances instead of regulated fortified ingredients,” Adamu emphasized.

Producers were warned against using adulterated, counterfeit, unregistered, and expired items in their operations. Adamu reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to continuous enforcement to ensure the availability of hygienic and properly regulated food products.
The enforcement efforts will extend to local government areas to ensure the sale of hygienic foods and the circulation of the right products. Adamu urged the public to avoid unregistered products and report any suspicious activities or contaminations to NAFDAC, reinforcing the agency’s ongoing dedication to safeguarding the nation’s health.
