In a significant move toward fostering gender inclusivity and youth empowerment, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) inaugurated a specialized desk dedicated to advancing the growth of women and young entrepreneurs within the MSME sub-sector.
The unveiling ceremony, led by SMEDAN’s Director General/CEO, Mr. Charles Odii, and the Minister of Women Affairs, Barr. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, took place at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
Odii highlighted SMEDAN’s commitment to women’s empowerment, emphasizing data-driven decisions to recognize women as pivotal drivers of the mission to create prosperity.
The newly established desk aims to democratize financial access for women, offering tailored training and ensuring proportional inclusion in all SMEDAN programs.
During the event, select women and youth-led SMEs showcased their products, engaging with Odii and the minister on various growth-related issues, including regulations, taxation, and operational costs.

SMEDAN’s DG revealed plans to collaborate with agencies like CAC, NAFDAC, and REA to optimize regulatory frameworks for business growth, fostering a friendly business environment.
Minister Kennedy-Ohanenye commended SMEDAN’s focus on women and expressed readiness to partner in championing the causes of female SME owners. The collaboration aims to equip female entrepreneurs across various fields with modern tools, raising production standards and increasing profits.
Following the desk unveiling, the minister inspected SMEDAN’s common facility centre, equipped with industrial sewing machines and other tailoring tools available for use by women in the area.
SMEDAN plans to extend similar benefits to women in other parts of the country as it commences the revamp of Industrial Development Centres and hubs in strategic locations across Nigeria.
