The Nigeria Labour Congress has begun mass mobilization in preparation for a statewide strike due to begin on Wednesday to protest the hardship caused by the elimination of fuel subsidies.
This has taken a significant toll on small business owners. Some are concerned that the demonstration could spark an unanticipated riot, while others believe that the protest will be beneficial since the president will be able to hear the screams of the people.
There is no country in the world where the government completely abandons its people to the whims of the market without any oversight or protection. Instead of subjecting everyday folks to unwarranted suffering and misery, the Federal Government should take swift and decisive action to address the criminal substance of subsidies.
The NLC stated that fixing all of our refineries was necessary “as a matter of national importance” in order to meet domestic fuel consumption.
Mr. Olamide, a spare part seller in Lagos, stated, “I am so afraid of these protests, because everything in this country always leads to violence, but I just believe the president will address the issue without any protest.”
“We just have to be careful that the hoodlums don’t take over the protest because our shops could be vandalized and so many other bad things,” he warned.
Mrs Sarah Rahman, another trader, stated, “I am fully supportive of this protest because our government will not work until they feel threatened, so let NLC go ahead.”
“I believe the protest will be a good way to show Mr. President that this hardship is unbearable,” said, Mr. Faruq Shitta.
