The Senate has urged the federal government to promptly tackle the nation’s food insecurity crisis to prevent a looming disaster. Highlighting the urgency, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan warned that the country’s food reserves are depleted. This call to action followed a motion by Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi West, addressing the critical need to combat food insecurity and market exploitation.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio reassured that the government is implementing measures to mitigate the food crisis. He tasked Senator Salihu Mustapha, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, to update the Senate on fertilizer distribution. Mustapha explained that the government has allocated fertilizer distribution responsibilities to state governors, with additional supplies for senators and House representatives to ensure broad reach.

Senator Ali Ndume highlighted alarming global predictions of acute food insecurity in Nigeria, noting visible hunger in northern regions. He, along with Senator Ahmed Wadada, stressed the critical need for immediate and decisive action to alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian populace.
