What inspired you to transition from a mathematics background to a career in interior design and furniture craftsmanship?
I never imagined transitioning from Mathematics and Computer Science to interior design and carpentry, as they seemed like two completely different worlds. However, I saw a gap in the industry—a place where furniture and decor weren’t being designed with enough focus on both aesthetics and function.
I realized that my mathematical background, with its attention to detail and problem-solving skills, could bring a fresh approach to design. The idea of merging creativity with precision was exciting to me, and I saw it as an opportunity to create something truly unique in the world of furniture craftsmanship and interior design.
As the child of a skilled carpenter, what unique lessons did you take from your upbringing that now influence your approach to furniture design?
Growing up with a father who owned the largest furniture showroom in Gbagada/Shomolu taught me so much about the craftsmanship involved in carpentry. As a child, I was embarrassed by the idea of my father being a carpenter, but as I got older, I started to truly appreciate the artistry behind it.
I began to visit his showroom, learning the intricacies of design, material selection, and construction. What I learned is that true craftsmanship is all about attention to detail, patience, and making sure that each piece is both functional and beautiful.
This foundation in carpentry has influenced my approach to interior design, where I blend these principles to create designs that are practical yet visually captivating.”
Your throw pillows have gained quite a following! What would you say is the secret to creating the perfect throw pillow?
The secret to a perfect throw pillow is all about balance between comfort, style, and functionality. It’s not just about the fabric or color; it’s about how it feels, how it complements the space, and how it adds personality to a room.
I focus on choosing the right filling and texture, ensuring that it provides comfort while enhancing the overall aesthetic. A great throw pillow should be both a visual statement and a functional addition to any living space. It should invite you to rest while elevating the design of the room.”
How do you balance aesthetics with functionality when designing?
Balancing aesthetics with functionality is a cornerstone of good design. For me, a piece of furniture or decor needs to look good but also serve a practical purpose. When designing a space, I always consider the functionality first—how the piece will be used, how it will fit into the daily life of the people using it.
From there, I build on aesthetics, ensuring the design enhances the environment. Whether it’s a sofa, a table, or a storage unit, every piece should be a seamless blend of beauty and utility, serving both the eye and the user’s needs.”
With nearly two decades of experience, how do you stay creative and innovative in such a fast-evolving industry?
Staying creative and innovative is all about staying curious and never stopping learning. I attend workshops, exhibitions, and trade shows to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies in design and furniture making.
I also make a habit of visiting larger brands, studying their processes and designs to understand what makes them stand out. This exposure keeps my ideas fresh and pushes me to think outside the box. Additionally, I’m always experimenting with new materials and techniques, which allows me to keep evolving and bringing innovative designs to the table.”
What was the most challenging project you’ve worked on, and how did you overcome the obstacles to deliver the vision?
One of the most challenging projects I worked on was a kitchen renovation where we had to remove and replace the tiles. I was nervous about the potential damage during the demolition process, as it was a delicate project. To address this, I brought in an architect to ensure that everything was structurally sound. His expertise helped us avoid any mishaps, and it was a great learning experience.
This project reminded me of the importance of collaboration and how working with the right experts can help overcome challenges and ensure the vision is realized safely and effectively.”
What trends or shifts in interior design have you noticed in recent years, and how are you adapting to them?
In recent years, there’s been a shift towards more sustainable and multifunctional designs. People are increasingly looking for furniture that not only looks good but also serves multiple purposes and is made with environmentally friendly materials.
I’ve been adapting by focusing more on creating versatile pieces that maximize space and function, especially for urban living. I also pay close attention to using sustainable materials without compromising on quality or aesthetics. This trend aligns perfectly with my design philosophy of creating beautiful, practical, and eco-conscious designs.”
If a client ever requested a “furniture superhero,” what powers do you think that piece should have to save the day in a home?
A8: “A ‘furniture superhero’ should have the ability to adapt to different situations and optimize the space. For example, a sofa that can transform into a bed for overnight guests, or an ottoman that can convert into additional seating or storage.
These types of multifunctional pieces can save space and offer flexibility, which is essential in today’s homes. The superhero furniture would also need to be durable, easy to maintain, and stylish enough to complement various interior styles. It’s all about maximizing functionality without sacrificing design.
What’s the funniest or most unusual request you’ve received from a client, and how did you approach it?
One of the funniest requests I got was from a client who wanted a sofa that could transform into a giant bean bag. They wanted something that was both functional and fun for family gatherings.
It was a bit unusual, but I saw it as a challenge to think creatively and combine comfort with practicality. We ended up designing a sofa that could be reconfigured into a large, cozy lounging area for the family to enjoy. It was a fun project, and I loved how it pushed me to think outside the traditional boundaries of furniture design.
