A call for urgent intervention has been directed towards President Bola Tunubu regarding the skyrocketing prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, in Nigeria.

Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, emphasized the pressing need for action during a recent address to journalists in Osogbo.

Expressing concern over the increasingly unaffordable cost of cooking gas for ordinary citizens, Oyintiloye highlighted the lack of tangible results following the federal government’s directive to halt LPG exports, as announced by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, on February 22.

The prevailing prices, ranging from N17,500 to N18,000 for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder, have pushed many consumers towards alternative, less eco-friendly fuel sources like charcoal and firewood.

Oyintiloye warned of the detrimental environmental impact, citing potential exacerbation of climate change, deforestation, desertification, and soil degradation.

Furthermore, the shift to solid fuels raises concerns about air pollution and its adverse health effects, including reduced oxygen delivery to vital organs. Oyintiloye stressed the interconnectedness of human survival with green plants and urged swift action to prevent further environmental degradation.

Calling on President Tunubu to prioritize the welfare of the populace and safeguard the nation’s forests and ecosystems, Oyintiloye underscored the urgency of addressing the economic hardships facing Nigerians amid fuel subsidy removal and unstable electricity supply. He urged collective efforts from all stakeholders to tackle the challenges plaguing the oil and gas sector effectively.
