The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has urgently appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration for intervention in the unprecedented surge in poultry feed prices, warning of a potential collapse in the poultry sub-sector if immediate action is not taken.

Expressing concern over the escalating costs, Mr. Hakeem Musa, Secretary of PAN, FCT Chapter, emphasized the need for the government to provide grants to farmers to help them sustain their businesses. Musa, who is also the CEO of Mushak Agro Consult, cited the alarming price fluctuations in layers mash, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

Musa revealed that a 25kg bag of feed, which was priced at N8,000 in November, has witnessed a relentless increase, reaching N10,950 at present. He expressed uncertainty about the future, questioning whether the upward trend would persist, especially given the supposed surplus of maize during November and December.

“We are hopeful that President Tinubu’s administration will focus on the industry and provide crucial intervention to support the poultry sub-sector,” Musa stated, emphasizing the necessity of grants rather than loans to ensure the industry’s sustainability, considering the financial losses farmers have endured over time.

Attributing the soaring feed costs to insufficient maize and soybeans – crucial components of feed production – as well as the ban on maize importation, Musa pointed out the detrimental impact on farmers, with some forced to shut down their farms and others drastically reducing bird capacities. The urgency of the situation calls for swift government action to prevent further setbacks in the poultry industry.
