Ondo Govt, World Bank to empower 34,000 livestock farmers through L-PRES Initiative

In a major move to boost agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods, the Ondo State Government, in partnership with the World Bank and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is set to empower over 34,000 livestock farmers across the state under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).


The initiative, which spans six years, focuses on enhancing productivity in key livestock value chains piggery, poultry, sheep, and goat farming. It also targets processors and marketers, ensuring a comprehensive approach to strengthening the livestock sector.

Speaking during a media briefing, Mr. Olufemi Adeogun, the State Programme Coordinator for Ondo L-PRES, revealed that the project is one of several being implemented across 20 states in Nigeria. H

e noted that the aim is to equip farmers with modern tools and techniques to scale commercial livestock production and make the sector more resilient to shocks.

> “The overall purpose is to ensure smooth implementation of the project in the state, in accordance with the Project Development Objective (PDO) and operational guidelines as contained in the Project Appraisal Document (PAD) and Project Implementation Manual (PIM),” Adeogun stated.

Beneficiaries have been grouped into clusters and sub-clusters to optimize training and resource distribution. The project has already sensitized targeted farmers between September 2023 and early 2024, and trained several extension agents and service providers to support the implementation.

The L-PRES initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to respond to agricultural crises, improve food security, and promote sustainable livelihoods through strategic investments in the livestock sector.
