Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, emphasized on Thursday that in order to reduce imports, the government must support local businesses and producers.

He gave a keynote speech in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at the launch of the Luxe Regal Brand of Royal Chairs by the Olatunde Prestige Limited, with the topic “SME’s key role in manufacturing and import substitution.”

Tunde Ebidero’s book, “Your Business as a Ministry: Developing a Kingdom-centered Perspective to your Work,” was also released at the occasion.

Mrs. Bola Obasanjo, who was acting in place of Obasanjo, stressed the value of the manufacturing sector in advancing the economy and empowering the thronging youth population.

We all know that the government can’t do it alone, the Olowu of Owu, Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola, said during the program. Enough with the government’s blame. Let’s consider what we can do to change things for the better, like Pastor Ebidero. Ebidero said he had stopped importing goods and switched to producing chairs locally.

He said that within a few years of opening, he had reduced importation, boosted the local economy, and hired roughly 1,000 young people.
