NSITF urges Nigerian employers to enrol in compensation scheme

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has called on employers across the country to prioritise the welfare of their staff by enrolling in the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS), as it disbursed over ₦18.6 million to the family of a deceased worker.

Speaking at the cheque presentation event in Abuja, NSITF Managing Director, Mr Oluwaseun Faleye, said the ECS plays a critical role in cushioning the impact of workplace injuries, disabilities, or fatalities on employees and their dependants.

Represented by the Executive Director of Operations, Mrs Mojisola Alli-Macaulay, Faleye described employers as key stakeholders in promoting workplace safety and ensuring no employee is left vulnerable in times of need.

“Today’s event is not just about disbursing funds. It is a reaffirmation of our commitment to social protection and compassion. The N18.6 million cheque is more than financial assistance – it is a symbol of collective responsibility,” he said.

The deceased was a staff member of Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria, who died in a road accident while returning from official duty.

Faleye commended the employer for maintaining a strong relationship with NSITF and for upholding the principles of the ECS as stipulated in the Employees Compensation Act of 2010.

He urged other employers to follow suit, not only by enrolling but also by ensuring prompt reporting of workplace injuries or diseases to avoid delays or penalties.

The ECS, managed by the NSITF, provides a vital social safety net for employees across Nigeria. It covers:

Compensation for work-related injuries and fatalities

Support for occupational diseases

Benefits for hearing loss and mental stress

Rehabilitation for injured or disabled employees


Employers are required to contribute 1% of their payroll for the first two years of registration, and the scheme applies to both public and private sector workers.

Faleye advised employers to reassign injured or disabled staff to suitable roles within their organisation and help educate others on the benefits of the ECS.
