The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced it has not received any funding request from Nigeria, despite speculation in business circles that the Federal Government was considering seeking IMF financing.
IMF’s African Region Director, Abebe Selassie, confirmed this on Friday in Washington during the unveiling of the regional economic outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa, October 2024. “No, there has not been a request for funding from the IMF in Nigeria,” Selassie stated.

He further clarified that any country turning to the IMF should have a clear economic reform plan, adding, “Turning to us would be a way to help reduce the funding costs that they face.”
