The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reiterated the federal government’s unwavering commitment to bolstering startups in Nigeria by providing essential resources and initiatives to propel the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research within the country.
During the Innovate Nigeria 2024 Conference & Expo held in Lagos over the weekend, NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, emphasized this dedication. Inuwa, represented by Dr. Aristotle Onumo, Director of the Agency’s Corporate Planning and Strategy Department, drew parallels between Nigeria and leading nations like the US and China, highlighting the substantial investments these countries have made in AI research due to its recognized potential for innovation and economic growth.

In his address, Inuwa underscored the critical link between government funding and progress in AI, citing projections that the AI market will exceed $190 billion by 2025. He outlined the Nigerian government’s initiatives to support AI research, including direct investment in research and development, the establishment of collaborative ecosystems, policy formulation, fostering international partnerships, and promoting education and workforce development.
These initiatives, Inuwa emphasized, are in line with the government’s 8-point agenda, particularly focusing on creating an environment conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship.
Inuwa also highlighted the significance of the 7th agenda of the government, which emphasizes accelerating diversification through industrialization, digitization, creative arts, manufacturing, and innovation. He noted that this aligns with the government’s role in AI research, emphasizing the democratization of digital services to drive economic value.
Furthermore, Inuwa elaborated on NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan, which aims to elevate Nigeria’s ranking in AI research and enhance digital literacy and talent development nationwide.
