The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) says it is participating in the 13th regular meeting of the national council on communication, innovation and digital economy in Jos, Plateau State, with discussions centred on how digital policy can better support small businesses across the country. The agency shared the update on its official X handle.

The meeting, themed accelerating inclusive digital transformation: bridging the gaps and fostering sustainable growth through innovation, brings together policymakers, technology leaders, innovators and government agencies to examine the digital barriers slowing down micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Stakeholders are reviewing challenges such as limited broadband access, high data costs, low digital literacy and infrastructure gaps—issues that continue to hinder the ability of small businesses to adopt digital tools for growth.

The council is also assessing national initiatives and considering new strategies to expand digital inclusion, strengthen innovation hubs, deepen digital skills and build a more supportive environment for SMEs seeking to scale through technology.

Through panel sessions and policy discussions, participants aim to align national efforts that will boost competitiveness, expand digital market access and help Nigerian small businesses benefit more from emerging opportunities in the digital economy.

NITDA’s involvement reinforces the push for a more inclusive digital ecosystem where SMEs can leverage technology to improve productivity, reach new customers and operate more efficiently.
