The Federal Government has announced an anticipated 15% reduction in courier service costs within Nigeria, following a new partnership between the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). This was disclosed by NIPOST’s Postmaster General, Tola Odeyemi, during the World Postal Day celebration in Abuja.

Odeyemi explained that the cost reduction is expected to take effect as the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NIPOST and SMEDAN begins to yield results.

The partnership aims to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country, providing them with improved market access and enhanced last-mile delivery capabilities. She noted that this initiative would not only reduce courier costs but also contribute to job creation and economic growth nationwide.

“NIPOST and SMEDAN have formalized this partnership to support MSMEs. With its implementation, these businesses can expect a 15% reduction in courier service costs, improved access to markets, and more efficient last-mile delivery services,” she stated.

Additionally, Odeyemi highlighted NIPOST’s ongoing partnership with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) to transport biological samples across the country. She revealed that the project is in its final stage, with launches planned for Taraba and Abia states.

This initiative is part of efforts to enhance the referral system for biological specimens using the National Integrated Sample Referral Network (NiSRN), leveraging NIPOST’s extensive delivery network.

She also mentioned the development of a National Addressing System in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPoPC) and other partners. The system will facilitate efficient mail handling, precise location identification, and consistency in address databases, supporting government agencies, financial institutions, and businesses.

As part of the World Postal Day celebrations, NIPOST unveiled its Agency Banking Solution, POTMONI, designed to provide accessible and affordable financial services to Nigerians nationwide. This innovation aims to connect more communities with banking services and promote financial inclusion across the country.

To mark the occasion, NIPOST’s state offices will organize road shows and other activities nationwide, promoting the role of the postal service in socio-economic development. “Our goal remains the same: to showcase the innovations, vision, and significant role NIPOST plays as a catalyst in Nigeria’s growth,” Odeyemi added.
