Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited has urged swift policy action to harness artificial intelligence, warning Nigeria may miss out on Africa’s projected $1.2 trillion AI economy share by 2030.
NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director, Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, made the call in a statement released on Friday, following her participation in the 12th National Council Meeting for Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, which took place in Makurdi, Benue State.
The meeting, hosted by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, had the theme: “Accelerating AI Adoption for Sustainable Development in Nigeria.”

Citing a PricewaterhouseCoopers reportEgerton-Idehen said,”Artificial intelligence is reshaping industries, economies, and societies worldwide, with projections that it will contribute up to $15.7tn to the global economy by 2030. Africa stands to gain $1.2tn of this if the right policies and innovations are in place,”
NIGCOMSAT’s boss emphasized AI’s transformative potential in agriculture, citing its suitability for Benue State, known popularly as Nigeria’s “food basket”.
According to her, machine learning tools could revolutionize agricultural practices by improving pest detection and optimizing planting schedules using satellite imagery.
