The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to positioning Nigeria’s automotive industry as a key driver of industrial growth, job creation, and technological advancement. Otunba Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), made this known while delivering the keynote address at the 2025 Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) International Auto Awards in Lagos.

He called for stronger collaboration among government, industry players, and the media to further develop the sector.
Osanipin commended NAJA for providing a credible platform that promotes accountability, informs the public, and celebrates excellence in the automotive industry.

He emphasised that a vibrant automotive sector is central to Nigeria’s broader industrialisation agenda, aligning with NADDC’s mandate to implement policies that boost local manufacturing, innovation, and technological capacity.

He also acknowledged the participation of key stakeholders, including government officials and industry leaders, highlighting the rising national importance of the sector.
Under the council’s leadership, Nigeria’s automotive industry has grown, with over 80 licensed assembly firms now operating under the National Automotive Industry framework.

The NADDC’s National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP) 2023–2033 targets increasing local production content to 40 per cent, scaling electric vehicle production to 30 per cent of total manufacturing, and creating jobs across the value chain within the next decade.

Despite this progress, the industry still faces challenges, including the country’s reliance on imported auto parts, valued at over US$1 billion annually.

The NAJA awards celebrated leading automotive brands and innovators, with Jetour Dashing winning Car of the Year, alongside recognitions in categories such as electric vehicles, innovation, and assembly excellence. Osanipin congratulated the awardees, reiterating that their contributions inspire growth, professionalism, and innovation.

He expressed optimism that continued collaboration between government, industry players, and the media will accelerate Nigeria’s journey towards becoming a competitive automotive hub in Africa.
