Nigeria Customs Service launches programme for trade efficiency

In a bid to bolster trade facilitation efforts nationwide, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has initiated an Authorised Economic Operators (AEO) programme, heralding a proactive approach to enhance efficiency and predictability.

During a recent stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, underscored the significance of the programme in fostering collaboration among customs, government agencies, and experts to elevate AEO initiatives.

Adeniyi emphasized the collective determination to revamp the ease of doing business within Nigerian ports, noting AEO’s broad scope across industry players.

The CGC reaffirmed the NCS’s commitment to improving trading experiences, announcing the commencement of the AEO pilot programme on April 15, 2024, with a focus on evaluating implementation visibility and gathering stakeholder feedback.

To ensure transparency and alignment with international standards, stakeholders including importers, exporters, SMEs, Customs agents, logistics operators, and government agencies have been selected to participate in the pilot scheme.

Chief Superintendent of Customs and AEO project manager, Awa Nnenna, highlighted the programme’s potential to streamline customs clearance processes while upholding transparency and inclusivity.

Charles Odii, Director General of SMEDAN, commended the NCS for engaging small-scale business owners, foreseeing the AEO programme’s positive impact on Nigeria’s economic growth.

Pius Akutah, CEO of the Nigeria Shippers Council, pledged support for the AEO programme, applauding the NCS’s initiative in driving trade efficiency.
