Uche Nnaji, Minister of Science and Technology, has stated that the new maize variety known as ‘Tela maize’ will save the government about $268 million in annual losses due to fall army worm.
Nnaji stated that by importing over 400,000 metric tonnes of maize each year, Nigeria will save foreign cash.
The minister, who spoke in Abuja yesterday during a visit to the Tela maize demonstration site, noted that, in addition to the new variety, Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) cowpea and Bt cotton are examples of innovation.
He stated that the new bean type signals a massive production increase of 20% per hectare, equivalent to an N48 billion annual economic boost.
He stated that the accomplishments in Tela maize, PBR cowpea, and Bt cotton are scientific milestones that demonstrate resilience and determination.
