In a landmark event that promises to reshape the narrative surrounding widowhood in Nigeria, J27 International Foundation successfully hosted its first-ever Widows’ Summit at the prestigious LCCI Conference Center, Ikeja.

Themed “Navigating Through Widowhood,” the event gathered widows from various regions across the nation to participate in a day filled with inspiration, empowerment, and vital resources aimed at addressing the multi-faceted challenges widowhood presents.

Founder Doyinsola Femi-Olaiya opened the summit with an impassioned speech, welcoming participants and emphasizing the foundation’s mission to provide widows with the support they need to overcome societal barriers. “Widowhood is not the end; it is the start of a new chapter,” Doyinsola stated. “This summit is our commitment to creating a community where widows can rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose, equipped with the resources necessary to thrive.”

The event featured a compelling keynote address by Hope Nwakwesi, President of the Union of African Widows, who shed light on the systemic issues faced by widows in African societies.

In her address, Nwakwesi highlighted the psychological, financial, and legal obstacles that widows often confront, stressing the need for societal reform and greater advocacy. “Widows endure isolation, stigma, and financial insecurity.

It is imperative that we foster environments where they can feel supported, rather than marginalized,” Nwakwesi emphasized.

A hallmark of the summit was its series of three dynamic panel discussions, each designed to tackle key aspects of widowhood:

  1. Navigating Through Widowhood: This panel delved into the emotional and psychological challenges that often accompany the loss of a spouse. Attendees heard from experts and fellow widows who shared personal stories of grief, anxiety, and depression. The panelists provided actionable strategies to help widows reclaim their mental well-being and navigate the complexities of widowhood.

2. Managing Finance as a Small Business Owner: Focused on the financial hurdles faced by widows, this panel provided essential advice on budgeting, saving, and investing. Finance experts offered practical insights aimed at helping widows gain financial independence, with a strong focus on empowering them to manage their businesses more effectively.

3. Policies and Implementations: Legal experts and advocates discussed the urgent need for policy reforms that protect the rights of widows and eliminate harmful cultural practices. The session was an eye-opener on the legal landscapes surrounding inheritance rights, property ownership, and the elimination of widow discrimination.

In an inspiring gesture, the summit honored several widows and their children with awards that celebrated their resilience and determination.

Additionally, the Sohcahtoa Foundation, a valued partner of J27 International Foundation, provided scholarships to the children of widows, reinforcing the importance of education as a tool for breaking the cycle of poverty.

The resounding success of this inaugural summit has set the stage for future events. J27 International Foundation remains committed to uplifting widows across Nigeria and beyond, with ongoing programs aimed at fostering an inclusive and compassionate society. The event concluded with renewed hope, a stronger sense of community, and actionable takeaways for the future.
