The National Economic Council (NEC) has directed states to develop hydropower, on or off-grid, and solar electricity infrastructure for communities and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
The decision was issued by the council at its 136th meeting, which was presided over by Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Thursday in Abuja.
Shettima stated that the NEC on X decision encouraged governments at all levels to facilitate the migration of heavy-duty industries/transport systems from fossil fuel to gas infrastructure.
“Given the new Electricity Act that empowers states and individuals to participate in all components of the energy sector, state governments should carry out energy audit to determine Energy needs and explore areas for collaboration with the private sector based on their comparative advantage,” said the NEC.

“States should develop small hydropower plants, on or off-grid, and solar, for communities and MSMEs.”
The NEC also encouraged the three levels of government to implement measures to promote behavioral change about energy use, waste, and theft.
According to the council, the government should encourage research and development, local content, and new energy (hydrogen, biofuels) prototype investments for energy sufficiency.
The NEC declared the conference a success and endorsed frequent interaction and synergy among federation commissioners of economic planning.
