The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has, for the second time in two years, shut down the notorious Cemetery Market in Aba, Abia State, following the discovery of counterfeit food and beverages valued at over ₦5 billion.
The latest crackdown, dubbed Operation Clean Up Aba, exposed the market as a hub for Africa’s largest counterfeit wine and beverage syndicate.
The raid uncovered over 240 illegal factories operating under hazardous conditions, producing fake versions of popular brands such as Hennessy, Seaman Schnapps, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Peak Milk, and Hollandia Yoghurt.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, described the operation as the most decisive action in the history of the market, highlighting the severe risks posed by the production of fake food and beverages.

“These criminal elements use contaminated water, harmful chemicals, and recycled bottles to manufacture counterfeit products. The adulteration of alcoholic drinks involves cheaper sugars and starches instead of genuine ingredients,” Adeyeye explained.
During the operation, over 1,500 cartons of fake products were destroyed on-site, while officials also discovered three warehouses stockpiling expired Hollandia Yoghurt for illegal revalidation.
Adeyeye commended the Abia State Government, Governor Alex Otti, and the Aba South Mayor for their unwavering support in the fight against substandard and dangerous products.
NAFDAC has urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious food and beverage products to the nearest agency office, reiterating its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring market integrity.
