NAFDAC destroys over ₦120 billion worth of counterfeit products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) announced it has destroyed substandard and counterfeit products worth over ₦120 billion across Nigeria in just six months.

According to NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the extensive operations covered Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from October to December 2024, focusing on the seizure of falsified medicines, counterfeit foods, and beverages.

Public Safety Alert

In her Christmas and New Year message, Prof. Adeyeye emphasized the importance of public safety, urging citizens to:

Purchase food and beverages only from credible and trustworthy outlets.

Avoid products without NAFDAC registration numbers.

Be cautious of items sold at suspiciously low prices, which she warned are often substandard or counterfeit.


“When a product is too cheap, it is most likely compromised,” she stated, encouraging vigilance among consumers.

Sustained Enforcement Actions

NAFDAC has pledged to intensify its efforts to combat counterfeit and substandard products through the work of its Investigation and Enforcement (I&E) Directorate. These efforts include:

Seizing falsified medicines and counterfeit wines and drinks.

Removing dangerous food products from markets to safeguard public health.

Strengthening collaboration with the Pharmacovigilance (PV) and Post-Marketing Surveillance (PMS) Directorates to ensure compliance across the country.
