The development of Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs), which are acknowledged as key contributors to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), has been crucial to Nigeria’s economic progress.
“The economy of Nigeria will expand if MSMEs expand. Anything that affects MSMEs will have an effect on the economy, whether it be beneficial or negative.
“We would like a win-win scenario. Thuweba Diwani, project manager at the GIZ/Digital Transformation Centre (DTC), Nigeria, stated this during a recent “digital policy dialogue” session on the Nigeria Start-up Act (NSA) in Lagos. “We can only do that if we have enabling policies and environment,” she added.
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union jointly funded the digital policy dialogue, which was organized by GIZ/DTC, Germany Cooperation, and the Nigeria Innovation Technology and Digital Agency (NITDA). The Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH served as the dialogue’s implementing partner.
The dialogue’s main objective was to improve policy implementation so that the digital innovation ecosystem, organizational performance, and network services could all be improved for the development of the digital economy.
Tech start-ups and enterprises must collaborate, according to Diwani, who also warned that doing otherwise could sabotage efforts to go to the next stage. The GIZ/DTC saw the debate as being necessary as a result.
The dialogue, in her opinion, was also intended to encourage open dialogues and acquire insightful information from stakeholders in order to develop a useful framework that encourages innovation, entrepreneurship, and long-term economic growth within the Nigerian start-up ecosystem and digital economy.
Aminu Muhammed, the DG NITDA’s special advisor on digital transformation, stated that the goals of NSA were to draw in investment, produce jobs, and foster economic innovation. According to him, digital transformation is about people, processes, and technology and calls for a shift in everyone’s attitudes and behaviors.
