Minister of Communications and Digital Economy,Dr. Bosun Tijani has called for support for the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill, highlighting its potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s economy.
Speaking at a media engagement, he emphasized that passing the bill would provide a legal framework to accelerate the digital economy, projected to generate N18.3 billion by 2026.
The minister underscored the success of Nigerian unicorn companies like Flutterwave, Jumia, Andela, and Interswitch as evidence of the digital economy’s strength.
“Technology is creating jobs for our youth, addressing the job deficit in the tech sector,” Tijani stated, adding that the bill would foster fair competition, innovation, and economic growth.
Dr. Tijani highlighted the bill’s nationwide implementation plan, covering all six geopolitical zones. Malam Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), represented by Mr. Emmanuel Edet, urged Nigerians to embrace digital technology, emphasizing the bill’s role in enhancing digital capabilities across government and private sectors.

The comprehensive bill, structured in 16 parts with over 60 sections, addresses various aspects of digital transactions, including consumer protection, use of AI, and blockchain technology in public services. It aims to mandate digital transformation in public institutions, ensure secure data exchange, and promote digital literacy for improved citizen services.
Sen. Shuaib Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrimes, and Rep. Stanley Adedeji, Chairman of the House Committee on Digital and Information Communication Technology, affirmed lawmakers’ commitment to adopting and implementing the bill.
