In a bold move to reshape women empowerment initiatives, the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, announced that the ministry will refrain from using traditional loans for its programs, apart from interest-free loans approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, Mrs. Kennedy-Ohanenye emphasized the ministry’s commitment to finding alternative funding solutions that better serve Nigerian women, particularly in agriculture. She urged Nigerians to support government efforts by providing financial aid or farming equipment to women farmers to enhance their productivity and contribute to food security across the nation.

“We don’t want to continue with loans anymore, and I believe Nigerians are aligned with that,” she asserted. “Except for loans the president approves, which will be interest-free, we won’t engage in loans that burden women. They do not benefit them.”

The minister further highlighted the need for funding that does not place financial strain on the country. “We should be raising our own funds and getting machinery support, so contributors can see the direct impact of their assistance without pushing Nigeria into more debt.”

Additionally, Mrs. Kennedy-Ohanenye disclosed that the Ministry has formed strategic partnerships with Atlanta, Georgia, to establish plantations for sunflowers, hibiscus, and jatropha, crops that will strengthen Nigeria’s economic standing.
