The newly appointed Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has pledged to revamp Nigeria’s livestock industry, highlighting its significance to the nation’s food security, cultural heritage, and rural development.
In his inaugural address, Maiha emphasized the need for sustainable and inclusive growth in the sector. “Our mission is to transform livestock into a resilient ecosystem where private sector actors can thrive,” he stated.

Identifying key challenges such as high feed costs, disease outbreaks, and farmer-herder conflicts, he committed to addressing these through policies that support investment, climate-smart practices, and grazing reserve development.
“We aim to incentivize youth and women in livestock, forge partnerships, and adopt best practices to boost productivity and job creation,” Maiha added, signaling his dedication to fostering a modernized and commercially viable sector.
