The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to invest in agriculture, highlighting its critical role in economic development and poverty alleviation. At the 31st Annual Development Forum of the LAPO Group in Abuja, Senator Aliyu Sabi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, emphasized that agriculture is essential for tackling extreme poverty in the nation.
Represented by Victor Oyegoke, his Special Assistant on Cooperative and Farmers Welfare, the minister pointed out that overcoming poverty requires a blend of policy reforms, effective social protection measures, and frameworks aimed at socio-economic empowerment. “Agriculture is a cornerstone of our economy, crucial for reducing poverty, enhancing growth, and ensuring food security,” he stated, stressing the need to leverage Nigeria’s fertile land and youthful population to combat these challenges.

Dr. James-Wisdom Abhulimen, Head of Programme and Communications at LAPO, revealed that the microcredit firm has disbursed over ₦1.4 trillion to small and medium-sized enterprises over the past 37 years, aiding petty traders and farmers in contributing to economic stability. LAPO CEO Godwin Ehigiamusoe echoed the call for collective action to address the pervasive issues of poverty, urging all stakeholders to work together for national prosperity.
