Former President John Mahama is set to launch the One Million Coders Initiative today, a bold nationwide program aimed at equipping Ghanaians with top-tier digital skills to drive economic transformation.

Spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Digitalisation and Innovation, the initiative will train one million citizens in coding, AI, cybersecurity, and data analytics targeting youth, women, persons with disabilities, and underserved communities.

Training kicks off in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Bolgatanga, with a 50:50 gender inclusion policy and future expansion via Regional Digital Centres.

“This initiative is critical,” said Maud Ashong Elliot, President of the Internet Society Ghana Chapter, who called for offline learning options and job placement structures to ensure lasting impact.

The move comes a week after the launch of the Feed Ghana project, showcasing the government’s dual focus on tech and agriculture. But experts caution that digital success hinges on execution, infrastructure, and sustainability.

With eyes on global models like Rwanda and the UAE, Ghana is betting on digital power to position itself as Africa’s next tech hub.
