At a recent event, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Abubakar Kyari, revealed that the livestock sector accounts for 5% of Nigeria’s national GDP and 17% of the agricultural GDP.
He highlighted this during the closing of a training program for 100 extension agents and farmers on small ruminant production and crop residue processing.
The training, aimed at improving ruminant productivity, was held at the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation (NCAM) in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Kyari, represented by his special assistant, Dr. Mustapha Popoola, commended the efforts of extension agents and farmers in enhancing livestock production.

He urged them to collaborate effectively with farmers to boost productivity and reduce costs. He also praised the Kwara State government for its significant efforts in livestock development.
Mr. Sanusi Abubakar, the national coordinator of L-PRES, emphasized that the training would help achieve the project’s objectives. Represented by Mr. Ellu Daniel, he assured continued support from the national coordination office and encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained to improve livestock productivity across Nigeria.
