The Lagos State Government has signed a major waste management agreement with ZoomLion Nigeria, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, in a move expected to modernise waste handling and create over 5,000 jobs.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who witnessed the signing, described it as a bold step to tackle Lagos’ daily waste output of 13,000 tonnes.
Under the deal, a Transfer Loading Station will be built at the Olusosun dumpsite, which will eventually be shut down. From there, 2,500 tonnes of waste daily will be transferred to a new Material Recovery Facility in Ikorodu.
A similar structure will be developed at Solous III in Igando, with 1,500 tonnes redirected to another recovery centre in Badagry.
“This partnership speaks to our vision for a cleaner, healthier, and more liveable Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said. “It also ties into our environmental agenda and commitment to global best practices.”
The project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, presenting new business opportunities in recycling, logistics, and facility management for small and medium enterprises.
With urban waste management becoming a growing concern for cities, this initiative is seen as a model for sustainable development and job-led environmental reform.
