The Lagos State Government and private sector stakeholders have urged structured waste management as a key driver of Nigeria’s green economy at the 6th Lagos Waste Forum. Discussions highlighted how recycling and circular economy models could unlock an estimated $250 billion in economic value.
Organised by SWEEP Foundation NG with support from UNIDO, the European Union, and Coca-Cola Nigeria, the forum brought together policymakers, investors, and environmental experts to explore waste as a source of jobs, enterprise growth, and industrial innovation. Lagos, generating the largest volume of waste in the country, was identified as a hub for circular economy solutions, offering opportunities for recyclers, processors, and small businesses.

Experts noted that Nigeria produces about 32 million tonnes of waste annually, with Lagos alone generating N18bn in recycling value in 2021, highlighting untapped potential for MSMEs in logistics, manufacturing, and climate-smart technologies. Stakeholders called for stronger financing mechanisms, including low-interest loans for waste-to-wealth entrepreneurs, and technical support to scale green businesses.
The forum concluded with a commitment to practical, evidence-based strategies that position waste as a profitable resource while fostering job creation, innovation, and sustainable growth for small and medium enterprises.
