The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the popular Agege abattoir market over unsafe and unhygienic practices, including traders allegedly sleeping in the market alongside animals.
The market was shut on Thursday during an inspection visit by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who revealed the disturbing conditions in a video posted on his official X handle.
“It’s not going to work. The government sent me here, and I’ve done the message. I am closing it down until things are done the right way,” Wahab said, addressing traders during the visit. “People cannot be sleeping in an animal field; it’s not going to work, and let’s try to do something right. When we shut it down, somebody will sit down and think.”

The closure of the Agege abattoir is part of an ongoing state-wide enforcement drive targeting markets that violate environmental laws. In recent months, markets in Ketu, Mile 12, and Owode Onirin have also been sealed for similar infractions, including illegal waste disposal and unsanitary conditions.
Wahab reaffirmed that these actions are in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, stressing the need for all market stakeholders to adhere to proper sanitation and public health standards.
The government has indicated that the market will remain closed until corrective measures are taken and full compliance is achieved.
