Residents of Ikoyi-Obalende in Lagos rejoiced as the ‘Ounjè Eko’ Discount Market, an initiative from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, reopened on Sunday.
This marks the launch of Phase II after a successful Phase I earlier in the year, which covered all 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas. The market, which operates on Sundays, offers a 25 percent discount on select food items.

At the market held at the former Nursing School Ground on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, residents formed orderly lines to benefit from the reduced prices. Mrs. Janet Obi praised the initiative for its significant savings compared to regular market prices and expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu and state House of Assembly representative Mr. Gbolahan Yishawu.
Mrs. Tunrayo Oredola highlighted the market’s importance in combating food insecurity, while Mr. Isaac Jared called for the program’s expansion due to its relief amid high living costs.
Market leader Mrs. Olabisi Lois confirmed that despite a 20 percent price increase on some items, the discounts continue to offer substantial savings. Residents also appreciated the N1,000 vouchers provided as part of the initiative.
