The Lagos State Government has introduced a cashless payment system for the newly launched Omi Bus Ferry Service, enabling passengers to pay with Cowry Cards—the contactless payment solution already in use across Lagos’ transit networks.
Announced by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) on Wednesday, this initiative aims to simplify payments and unify transit systems across Lagos, enhancing the efficiency of daily travel for both individuals and businesses.
With the Cowry Card, passengers can now enjoy cash-free travel, reducing transaction times and making commuting more convenient. LASWA noted that this move supports the state’s commitment to modernize Lagos’ transportation infrastructure, fostering an interconnected network that streamlines transit for everyone, including business commuters who depend on reliable and efficient travel options.
To further prioritize safety, LASWA has partnered with LASACO Assurance to provide comprehensive insurance for the Omi Bus fleet, assuring businesses and individuals of secure travel.

The ferries are equipped with life jackets, fire extinguishers, and life buoys, while additional safety features, including non-slip mats and a public address system, add an extra layer of protection.
In addition to safety, the ferry service has integrated amenities that support both comfort and environmental sustainability. Features like USB charging ports, LED lighting, and a stereo system cater to modern commuting needs, and the ferries’ eco-friendly design minimizes emissions, which is crucial for businesses invested in sustainable practices. These efforts have earned international recognition from Interferry, a global ferry association that champions high safety and environmental standards.
LASWA encourages residents and business professionals alike to consider the Omi Bus Ferry as a reliable, eco-friendly alternative to road travel. The service supports Lagos State’s broader vision of an integrated, forward-thinking transport network, providing a modern and effective option that reduces congestion and boosts the city’s economic productivity.
