The government of Lagos State has unveiled its strategy to provide training for a substantial number of artisans, totaling 10,000 individuals, across a diverse array of skills.
The initiative, which seeks to bridge the skill gap prevalent in the housing sector and effectively tackle the recurring issue of building collapses, is anticipated to cultivate a significant avenue for skill enrichment and empowerment.
In an official statement to the media, Mr. Kamar Olowoshago, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Housing, articulated that the Master Craftsman Training Program is accessible to residents of the state aged 18 and above.
Eligibility requires a foundational understanding of the pertinent skills, whether obtained through technical colleges or informal apprenticeships.
Application forms, as highlighted by Olowoshago, can be procured without any financial charge from the Ministry’s Directorate of Administration and Human Resources. Notably, the selection process will follow a first-come, first-served basis.
Olowoshago emphasized that Lagos, a bustling metropolis with a thriving real estate sector, contends with an estimated deficit of three million housing units, and it regrettably holds the undesirable distinction of leading the nation in incidents of building collapses.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state has personally championed this initiative, driven by the imperative to furnish secure and suitable housing for Lagos residents, while simultaneously eradicating the recurring specter of building collapses. Human error has been identified as a central cause of such incidents, often attributed to the involvement of unqualified individuals, utilization of substandard materials, and a propensity to cut corners.

The intensive six-week training program, as outlined by Olowoshago, will concentrate on fundamental construction trades including carpentry, furniture crafting, painting, decorating, plumbing, pipe fitting, and masonry encompassing block laying and concreting.
Moreover, participants will receive instruction in complementary subjects like customer service, information technology, and health and safety. The training curriculum will be orchestrated by domain experts, assuring that participants are equipped with the latest industry trends.
Olowoshago underscored that the technical institutes situated in Ikotun within the Alimosho Local Council and Ikorodu within the state have been designated as the training hubs. This strategic selection aims to bolster the competitive capabilities of artisans within Lagos State, positioning them favorably in comparison to their peers from neighboring regions.
